David Newton Maddox, Sr.

David Newton Maddox, Sr., Calhoun, Georgia passed away at his home on Saturday, August 29th. One of twelve siblings, he was born in Porterdale, Georgia on October 20, 1934, to the late Alvin and Maxie Maddox. He graduated from Newton County High and earned his rank of Eagle Scout as a teenager and later, as an adult, worked with boy scouts in Calhoun to help them obtain their Eagle ranking. He served in the United States Coast Guard after high school until 1961. He graduated from John Marshall Law School and two schools of banking, one at the University of Georgia and the other at Louisiana State University. He spent his career as a banker with Calhoun First National Bank, from where he retired after 30 years. After retirement he was able to begin enjoying his real passion, woodwork and furniture refinishing, and he started a business, Maddox Restorations, with his son, David Maddox, Jr. He loved his community and was a member of the Calhoun Jaycees and the Calhoun Elks Club, where he served as Exalted Ruler. He was on the Board of Aidmore Children’s Center in Atlanta, which is supported by many Georgia Elks Clubs. He and his wife were involved with the Calhoun High Marching Band Boosters Club, where they served as Co-Presidents in the early 70’s. He was a Magistrate Court Judge in Gordon County. And he was a member of Calhoun First Baptist Church. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, brother and uncle. He was loved and respected by the community and will be remembered for his love of children and the ability to make any child laugh, his beautiful woodwork, and his trademark bow tie and handlebar mustache. He loved animals, built many bird houses and loved to birdwatch, and will be deeply missed by his best buddy, his cat Buckshot. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin and Maxie Maddox; sister, Vivian Maddox; sister, Joanne Maddox Knight; sister, Faye Maddox Akins; brother, JC Maddox, and sister, Sharon Maddox. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lillian Diane Ferren Maddox; daughter, Vivian Maddox Richmeier; son, David Newton Maddox, Jr (Sandy); son, Jonathan Brevard Maddox (Julie); grandchildren, Deidre McGinnis Hankinson (Ben), Lauren Rickmeier Dowdy (Will), Molly Maddox Burrows (Sean), Sarah Dianne Maddox, Jon Ross Maddox, Serra Ruth Maddox, and Floe Jewel Maddox; great-grandchildren, Crimmins John Hankinson III, Maddox Berry Hankinson, Whitner Mayson Hankinson and John Blake Dowdy; brothers, Lynwood Maddox, Sr. (Bonnie) and Wayne Maddox (Vicki); sisters, Betty Lou Maddox Shaw, Gail Maddox Lindsey (Wallace), Glenda Maddox Austin and Shirley Maddox Crawford; and many nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life Services is planned for Saturday, September 5th, at First Baptist Church, Calhoun, Georgia, with Visitation with family from 1:00-2:45 PM in the Christian Life Center, and the Service beginning at 3:00 PM in the Sanctuary. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to either the American Cancer Society or Aidmore Children’s Center.
