Eva Swanson Gaines, age 94 of Calhoun, passed away on Sunday, July 26, 2015 in Gordon Hospital following several days of illness. Eva was born on November 10, 1920 in Gordon County. She was a daughter of the late F.M. Swanson and Bettie Holland Swanson. Also, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph E. Gaines who died October 4, 2003; a sister, Gustava Swanson Lewis; a brother, R.O. “Bowser” Swanson; and her son-in-law, Lonnie Hasty. Eva was a lifetime resident of Gordon County, a loving mother and grandmother, and a good cook. She had retired after 30 years of service with Palmer Drug Company, and she was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Ruth Sunday School Class. She is survived by two daughters, Betty Dailey and her husband Joel and Charlotte Hasty; three grandchildren, Douglas Hasty and his wife, Charlin, Gregory Hasty and his wife Katie, Elizabeth Reilly and her husband Chris; five great-grandchildren, Caroline, Garrett, and Will Hasty, Morgan and William Reilly; one step-daughter, Phyllis Hammick; and a special friend, Bonnie Talley. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 28 at the First Baptist Church with Dr. John Barber and Dr.Bert Vaughn officiating. Burial will be in Fain Cemetery. The Gaines family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 AM at the church preceding the funeral. Active pallbearers are Jimmy Palmer, Jack Brown, Tommy Curtis, Cale Curtis, Shane McDougle and Monty Erwin. Honorary pallbearers are members of the Ruth Sunday School Class. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church. Thomas Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements for the services of Eva Swanson Gaines.
