Lamar Charles Stephens

Mr. Lamar Charles Stephens, age 89 of Calhoun, passed away At Gordon Hospital on February 13, 2015. He was born in Gordon County June 15, 1925, son of the late James Millard Stephens and the late Ruby Bagwell Stephens. Lamar was a member of Blackwood Springs Baptist Church. Lamar was retired as a Chief Boatswain’s Mate from the U.S. Navy having served 23 years from 1942 until 1966. He served on several ships and made the Goodwill World Cruise in 1948 on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Rendova. He retired from Lockheed Aircraft’s security department in 1990 with 21 years of service. Lamar also worked for Gordon County Sheriff, Pat Baker, as a deputy from 1973 to 1975. He has also been a collector of local historical and nautical memorabilia for several years. Lamar is survived by his wife, Evelyn Greeson Stephens, to whom he was married for 62 years. He is also survived by five daughters and son-in-laws, Joan and Bobby Dodd, Jean and Billy Johnson, Ann and Gerald Mashburn, Vivian and Randy Reddick, Patsy and Robert Craig, all of Calhoun; a half-sister, Mrs. Peggy Adcock of Adairsville; and a half-brother, Myron Bohannon of Calhoun; grandchildren David Craig, Carla Craig Blackstock, Amy Mashburn Chambers, Brent Mashburn and Julia Johnson Hurley and eleven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday February 15, 2015 at 4 PM from Blackwood Springs Baptist Church with Rev. Travis Hyde officiating. Music will be arranged by Fay Prather. Burial will follow in Fain Cemetery with full military honors and honors from the Gordon County Sheriff’s office. Family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday February 14, 2015 from 5 to 8 PM. Pallbearers serving include: David Craig, Brent Mashburn, Bryan Blackstock, Delbert Chambers, Bart Hurley, Caleb Chambers, Cole Craig, Hunter Brock, Murphy Robinson, Curt Craig, and Ethan Hurley. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Blackwood Springs Cemetery Fund @ 4921 Fairmount Hwy SE, Calhoun, Georgia 30701.
