Mrs. Oline Marvel, 95, of Resaca and formerly of Hastings, Nebraska, died Friday February 7, 2014, in Dal-ton, Georgia. Oline was born May 26, 1918 in Grand Island, Nebraska, to Nancy and Hanny Lindemann. She completed her public education in Grand Island and graduated from Hastings College in 1940 with a Public School Music major. Following graduation she taught English and music at Hildreth, NE high school. On May 17, 1941 she married Richard Marvel of Hastings NE. Oline pursued her interests in music and books throughout her long life, playing piano for countless community organizations and events and reading literally thousands of books. She was especially pleased to introduce the new Nebraska state song. "Beautiful Nebraska," to Hastings during the Memorial Day services at Highland Park in 1967. Oline worked at Hastings Public Library from 1959 to 1987. During her tenure at HPL, Oline presented numerous book reviews to reading and service clubs and was featured on a weekly KHAS television show giving library news and book chats. She also hosted her own daily KHAS Radio show called "Basket of Books." At the annual state meetings of the Nebraska Library Association, Oline prepared valuable brief reviews of books to share with librarians from across the state, and in 1982 she received the Nebraska Library Association Meritorious Service Award. In 1983 she presented a 63-minute review of 48 notable new books for children and young people and 18 recent works by Nebraska authors at the Nebraska Library Association Spring meeting. This review was videotaped and published as "The Nebraska bookshelf" and "ALA notable books" in 1983. Throughout the 1950s, 1960s, and early 1970s Oline enjoyed travelling the third legislative district with her husband. Senator Richard Marvel; she also attended the legislative sessions in Lincoln and did valuable research for her husband, commuting back and forth between Hastings and Lincoln during these busy years. Oline was a member of the 1976 Bicentennial committee, as well as First Presbyterian Church, Round Table book club, and Chapter G, P.E.O. She was also a long-term member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Grand Island, NE. Oline was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Norma Ridgway, and her husband Richard. Survivors include son and daughter-in-law Doug and Shirley Marvel, Resaca. GA. daughter and son-in-law Anne and Martin Davidson, Portland, OR, six grandchildren, Jonathan Marvel, Alan Marvel, Max Davidson, Bailey Davidson, Melanie West, Daniel Marvel, and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Memorial services will be held in Hastings, NE at First Presbyterian Church Chapel at a later date. Memorials may be given to the Hastings Public Library, Hastings, NE 68901 or to the First Presbyterian Church, Hastings, NE 68901.
