Mr. Dan Miller “Possum” Autry, age 83 of Calhoun, Georgia, passed away on Thursday, June 25th, 2026, at his residence.
Mr. Autry was born in Gordon County on March 23rd, 1943, a son of the late William Harold Autry and the late Cora Newton Autry. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a brother, Buddy Autry. Mr. Autry was a graduate of Calhoun High School and a lifetime resident of Calhoun and Gordon County. He was a member of Calhoun First Baptist Church and was retired from Calhoun City Fire Department after 28 years of service to the community. When he wasn’t working at the fire station, he could be found at Carden Wholesale and continued to work there even after retiring from the fire department. Mr. Autry had a true servant’s heart, and it was evident throughout his life. In the summertime he would volunteer his time to help build churches with Carpenter’s for Christ and at other times, he would go through the woods looking for a stick that would make the perfect walking cane to give away. In his younger days, he enjoyed hunting and fishing and in the latter years, he enjoyed working crossword puzzles and playing dominoes with his wife, every night before bed.. Dan served 6 years in the local Georgia Army National Guard Unit, Headquarters Company, First Batalion,, 108th Armor, 48th Brigade..
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Patsy Burnette Autry; one daughter, Dena Autry Wright (Greg); two brothers, Marion Autry and Newton “Frog” Autry; uncle and aunt, Faye and Polly Autry; brother-in-law, Jimmy Burnette (Helen); one grandson, Bristol James-Michael Wofford; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, June 28th, 2026, at 4 PM at Calhoun First Baptist Church with Rev. Steven Waters officiating. Mr. Chuck Poarch and Mr. Charley Kirby will deliver the eulogies. Interment will follow in Chandler Cemetery with Rev. John Massingill in charge of graveside rites. Gentlemen serving as pallbearers include all Active and Retired City of Calhoun Fire Department Employees.
