Fred R. Penick of Calhoun, Georgia died at the age of 86 on April 15, 2017 at his home. He leaves his wife of 64 years, Fay D. Penick. They were married in Memphis, Tennessee in 1953. He is survived by his daughter, Jennifer P. Beason, her husband W. Keith Beason, his son, Jeffrey M. Penick and his wife, Susan DeGennaro Penick of Ellensburg Washington, and two grandchildren, Avery N. Beason and Michael Brandon Brown Penick, his brother Charlie Penick of Lake Comorant, Mississippi as well as several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, Jesse Lee Penick and Charlotte Todd Penick and siblings Jack Penick and Margaret Hargan. Fred graduated from the University of Memphis in 1953 and the University of Georgia in 1988 with a master’s degree in Social Work. He retired as Director of Mental Health at Georgia Highlands Center in Dalton, Georgia. Active in retirement, Fred was a member of the Gordon County Historical Society as well as the Calhoun Arts Council. He went on to serve as Board Chairman of the North West Georgia Regional Library and most recently served as Board Chairman of Calhoun-Gordon Library. He was a Mason and served in the U.S. Army in 1954-1956. Fred’s passions in life included caring relationships with family and friends, gardening, woodworking, reading, community activities, bird watching and fishing with those who could carry on a good conversation. Funeral services will be held at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church with the Reverend Louis Tonsmeire officiating at 11am on Saturday April 22. Friends and family will gather in St. Timothy’s Fellowship Room following the service. Interment will be in the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia. The family request that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Volunteer Action Committee @ P.O.
