James Larry West

Larry West, age 78 of Easley, South Carolina and formerly Calhoun died December 30, 2023 after a brief illness.

He was preceded in death by his parents Eulas and Amer West and a brother, Harry West; all  Gordon County natives. Larry attended the local schools and was a graduate of Calhoun High School, class of 1962. As a youth he was involved in many activities including Troup 39, Boy Scouts of America. He later attended the University of Georgia with major studies in history. Also, he was an avid Georgia Bulldog fan. Later Larry attended Seminary School which was an important element in his Christian life.

Much of his adult career was his involvement with the Roman Catholic Church. He served as    Deacon for 27 years in dioceses in Florida, South Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee and in various capacities in the U.S. Army.

Larry is survived by his wife of 59 ½ years, the former Miss Elaine Shiflett. She also is a Calhoun native and became acquainted with Larry during their school years. She was a member of the significant and ambitious Calhoun High School Class of 1964.

Additional survivors are his children, Van A. West, Vaughn A. West, and Donna Whitaker; grandchildren, Tyler West, Taylor West, Bayleigh Holder, Kayla Roe, Hope Whitaker, Brandon Whitaker, Ali Alonso, Jeffrey Holden, and Britany Holden; 17 great grandchildren also survive, and additional local cousins; and many friends.
