Joe Calbeck Edens, age 92, of Sugar Valley, passed away at his home Sunday morning, October 5th.
Joe was born on November 4, 1932, on the old family homestead, where he passed away, a fact that he was very proud of. His father and mother were the late Frank Russell Edens and Pallas Athens Calbeck Edens. Joe was a member of the Sugar Valley Methodist Church. He served his country proudly during the Korean Conflict in the United States Army. He was a man's man; he loved working the farm and being outdoors from sunup to sundown. You could often find him at the cattle sales or just being with his many friends and fellow veterans. Joe was a member of the V.F.W. and a 70-year lifetime member of the American Legion Post #47. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Ruth Edens and Johnnie Fox, and a step-daughter, Sue Dempsey.
He is survived by his step-children, Gary (Diane) Lanier, Linda (Larry) Sutherland, Cathy Nicholson, and Barbara (Jim) Ledbetter, one sister, Sara Ann Patrick. Seven grandchildren also survive.
The family wishes to thank Joe's caregivers, Betty, Ansley, Joyce, April, Paula, Debbie, and Brittney, as well as the staff of Amedisys Hospice.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hero Agriculture @ 1392 Roland Hayes Parkway, Calhoun, Georgia, 30701.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, October 9th, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.
Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, October 9th, at 12 noon from the chapel of Thomas Funeral Home with Rev. Derron Brown officiating. Burial will follow in the Georgia National Cemetery with Military Honors.
