Kenneth James Sutherland, age 86 of Calhoun, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, February 21, 2026.
He was born on January 19, 1940 in Calhoun to the late Lena Cochran Sutherland and Hubert James Sutherland. He is survived by his loving wife, Latricia Towers Sutherland, to whom he has been married for 62 years. Also surviving are his two sons, Randy Sutherland and his wife Amy West Sutherland; and Teddy Sutherland and his wife Brandy Buchannan Sutherland.
Four Grandchildren: Luke Sutherland and his wife Esther Seaton Sutherland, Katie Sutherland McGraw and her husband Elijah, Hannah Sutherland, and John Sutherland.
Kenneth was a member of the Concord Baptist Church in Fairmount.
He was a life-long resident of Gordon County spending his most memorable childhood days in the Union Grove Community which remained dear to his heart. He attended grade school where he affectionately referred to as the “University of Bellwood” until 1956 when the school would consolidate with Calhoun City Schools.
At the age of 18, he would enlist in the Air National Guard and then later become a member of the 1st Squadron, 108th Cavalry Regiment of the Army National Guard here in Calhoun where he served until 1968.
After graduating in the 1958 class of Calhoun High, he began working at Dixie Bell Mills. After leaving Dixie Bell, he would begin a career with finance and banking institutions that would span nearly 4 decades. His first was with People’s Finance of Calhoun, and then Dixie Finance of Dalton. In the late 1970’s he accepted a position as a loan officer at Calhoun First National Bank. Kenneth would remain there until 1989 until he joined Georgia Bank and Trust. He would spend the next 16 years of his memorable career there before retiring in 2005.
For many years, Kenneth was co-host on WJTH’s Sunday Morning Gospel Time where gospel music and wholesome fun and fellowship would abound.
He was a very accomplished builder and wood worker, but his true passion was laboring in his Flower beds and garden spots in his yard. If he was working near the driveway entrance, whether it be neighbor or stranger on foot, a conversation brief or otherwise was sure to take place if the passerby hesitated in the least.
Kenneth Sutherland will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
The family will receive friends on Monday, March 2, 2026 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Concord Baptist Church located at 9414 Fairmount Hwy SE, Fairmount 30139.
