Thursday, November 09, 2006 Margaret R. “Marge” Watkins, 86, of Calhoun died on Thursday, November 9, 2006 at Hamilton Medical Center. She was born November 15, 1919 in Miami, Fla., daughter of the late David L. and Florence Iddings Ryan. She graduated from Asheville (N.C.) High School and from North Carolina Women’s College in Greensboro, N.C. (UNCG) in 1939. She retired from Gordon County Tax Commissioner’s Office where she was employed since 1977. Formerly she was employed by King Textiles for many years. A longtime community activist, she moved to Gordon County in 1948, where she was involved in Girl Scouting, was a Cub Scout Den Mother in Sugar Valley, and volunteered at Gordon County Recreation Department’s summer swimming program, giving swimming lessons to generations of children and adults. A member of Calhoun First Presbyterian Church, she was an ordained church officer, serving as both a Deacon and Ruling Elder. She was preceded in death by her husband Thos. B. Watkins in 1990. Her survivors include: a sister and brother-in-law Sarah R. and Charles Demetrowitz of Mitchellville, Md. and a sister-in-law Edna DeFoor of Calhoun; two sons and daughters-in-law Thomas R. and Vickie Watkins of Adairsville and John R. and Jane Watkins of Calhoun; a daughter Nancy E. Watkins of Cullowhee, N.C.; two grandsons, J.D. Zeke Watkins of Epworth and Beau R. Watkins of Calhoun; one granddaughter, Holli Watkins Story of Sugar Valley; and three great-grandsons, Kegan Watkins, Alex Kirby, and Cole Story. Memorial services will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, November 11 at the Calhoun First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Ken Waddell officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 p.m. November 10 at Thomas Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Calhoun First Presbyterian Church, PO Box 453, Calhoun, GA 30703, or your favorite charity. Thomas Funeral Home has charge of arrangements for the services of Margaret R. “Marge” Watkins.
