Mrs. Oma Jean Pennel, age 99, of Calhoun, Georgia, formerly of Augusta, Georgia, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 29th, 2025, at a local assisted living facility.
Mrs. Pennel was born in Charlotte, Arkansas, on May 15th, 1926, a daughter of the late Teddy Henderson Weaver and the late Susie Higgins Weaver. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Billy Malcolm Pennel; one son, Mark Pennel; two brothers, Glenn and Delano Weaver. After graduating from high school, Mrs. Pennel began her career with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, where she worked as a Fingerprint Analyst until her retirement. She was a devoted member of Alders Gate United Methodist Church in Augusta and loved serving others, especially the elderly members of the congregation. She often assisted them by providing transportation to doctors’ appointments and anywhere else they needed to go. Mrs. Pennel was also an active member of the Women’s Dental Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing bridge and ping pong and was an avid sports fan. Her love for sports led her to start a yearly tradition of attending the Augusta Masters golf tournament since 1970. She was a loving, generous woman who will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Survivors include her son, Dr. Ted Pennel and his wife, Larae; one daughter, Kathryn Pennel; four grandchildren, Sam Pennel (Amanda), Buck Pennel, Malone Weaver (Brett), and Isabella Pennel; two sisters, Bendean Malone and Sandy Holman; seven great-grandchildren, Eli, Emmie-Jean, Jude, Josiah, Rowan, River, and Isla.
Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, December 2nd, 2025, at 7 PM in the chapel of Thomas Funeral Home with Rev. Tim Reid officiating. Mrs. Pennel will be taken to Memorial Park Funeral Home in Memphis, Tennessee, for a graveside service on Saturday, December 6th, 2025, at 2 PM cst.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, December 2nd, from 5 PM until 7 PM at Thomas Funeral Home.
