Steven Tanner Yancey, a dedicated public servant, passed away on September 6, 2023, at AdventHealth Redmond. He was born on June 30, 1950, in Rome, Georgia. Steven had a long and illustrious career in law enforcement, leaving behind a legacy of service and commitment.

A deeply respected individual, Steven began his journey by serving with Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 108th Armor, Georgia Army National Guard for six years. Steven retired from the Georgia State Patrol where he worked tirelessly as a Georgia State Trooper ending his career as a Master Trooper after an impressive thirty-four years. He also served with the Gordon County Sheriff’s Office under Sheriff Pat Baker as a patrol officer and later transitioned into the roles of juvenile investigator and detective. He was a member of the Sonoraville Baptist Church and the Sonora Masonic Lodge #221 F&AM.

Steven's dedication to protecting and serving his community earned him a reputation for being reliable, compassionate, and diligent. Colleagues often spoke of his unwavering commitment to upholding the law and ensuring the safety of others. His tireless efforts made him not only respected but also loved by those who had the privilege of knowing him.

Outside of work, Steven cherished spending time with his beloved family and friends. He was a loving husband to Sara Jackson Yancey and a devoted father to Stephanie Bennett and Steven (Julie) Yancey. His grandchildren, Ashley Bennett, Morgan Bennett, Austin Yancey, and Sawyer Yancey brought immeasurable joy to his life. Steven shared a special bond with each member of his family and treasured every moment spent together.

He was preceded in death by his father Glenn Yancey and mother Gracelle Tanner Yancey, as well as his grandparents Arthur and Lema Yancey and Oscar and Lela Tanner.

A funeral service honoring Steven's life will be held at 1pm Saturday, September 9th at Sonoraville Baptist Church with Rev. Jamey Hunt and Rev. Jether Cochran officiating.
Faye and Ron Bentley, Ronnie VanDyke and Zach Pelfrey will have of the charge of music. Burial will follow in Chandler Cemetery with Full Honors afforded by the Georgia State Patrol and the Gordon County Sheriff’s Department Honor Guard.

Pallbearers serving include Nathan Roberts, Brett Shirley, Drew Darnell, Doug Chambers, Charlie Long, Chuck Kirby, Rodney Curtis, and Sheriff Mitch Ralston. Honorary pallbearers include Tom Yancey, Michael Yancey, GA State Patrol, Gordon County Sheriff's Office, Phil Roland and Roland Hay Farms Steve Langham, Jason Davis, and Dale Fletcher.

The family will receive friends Friday evening, September 8th from 5 until 8pm at the funeral home and on Saturday from 12 noon until the funeral hour at the church.
